He surfed Pipeline for the first time in his life in 1965, when he was 17. His surfing skills were so exceptional that he was hailed as a “prodigy who appeared in Hawaii,” and from 1970 onward, under the slogan “The Thrill is Back!,” he poured his passion into revolutionizing a scene dominated by shortboards, leading the revival of the longboard. By 1975, he had opened his own shop, and the following year, he created the “ASTRODECK” deck pad. He is a central figure in the history of board culture, having pioneered many innovations—such as the now-common fusion of art and surfing, the editing and filming of surf movies, and tow-in surfing using jet skis. Furthermore, through his many years of diverse artistic endeavors, he has shone as a truly unique artist, with his work being the first by a surfer to be featured in the world’s top galleries in cities such as New York, Paris, and London.
